Join us for a nature journaling sojourn through the majestic Mt. Adams country.
Learn artistic techniques for capturing the natural world through the written word and visual imagery. Draw inspiration from scenic landscapes and the examples of renowned naturalists such as John Muir.
The workshop will take place at the Mt. Adams Center in Trout Lake, Washington. Classes will be held at the center and in the field, which we will explore via bicycle, kayak, foot and car.
Who Should Attend?
Teachers, naturalists, scientists or anyone interested in exploring the art of recording nature in journal form. Nature journaling is a great tool for increasing awareness of the outside world and our place within it.
Schedule
Thursday (9:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M): Basic Drawing Techniques and Bike/Hike around Trout Lake.
Friday (8:30 A.M. – 4:00 P.M.): Basic Watercolor Techniques and Mountain Lake Kayaking.
Objectives

Increase awareness of the natural environment through exploration, art and writing.

Develop writing techniques for recording thoughts and scientific information in a journal.

Learn how to create a personal resource file of images for journaling.

Learn basic art techniques for making your own nature journal. Book making, drawing in pencil, pen & ink, and watercolor will be demonstrated and practiced.

Practice basic use of pencil, pen & ink, and watercolor to record natural objects.

Gain insight into how to encourage student interest in the natural world.

Explore resources from past and contemporary nature writers/artists to share with students.

Instructors
Jan Muir, a long-time Alaskan elementary teacher and professional artist will be instructing the majority of the workshop with help from natural resource professionals
Inspiring Sights

Bike an easy trail around Trout Lake to meet with a wildlife biologist to explore a lake and meadows ecosystem.

Hike the nature trail of a beautiful wetland area to record close-up views of Mt. Adams.

Travel by van to a mountain lake. Learn simple paddling techniques to safely navigate an inflatable kayak on flat water. Or wander the beautiful shore in search of solitude and subjects to record. Meet a professional archaeologist to learn about historical human interaction with the environment.
Tuition
$150 for whole workshop or $75 for each day. Tuition includes classes, field trip transportation, two lunches, snacks and beverages
12 Teacher Clock hours are available for $2 per clock hour.
Lodging (including dinner and breakfast) is available on site for workshop participants for an additional fee:

Wednesday night early-bird dorm room: $20 (no meals included)
