Volunteer on the Pacific Crest Trail

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How much experience do I need? None. Our Northwest Service Academy/AmeriCorps teams will provide all the training you’ll need to safely and enjoyably participate in each project. Volunteers range in age from 18 to 75. Some have trail experience, all have enthusiasm for the outdoors and willingness to work hard.

What’s a typical day like? Rewarding and exhausting. The opportunity to live and work in the backcountry with new friends is a definite highlight. Each day, you’ll work closely with the team and the other volunteers for 6-10 hours. Projects may be a short hike from your campsite or up to 7 miles away. You’ll become an expert at hiking, hauling, hoisting, and hydrating. You’ll share group chores. Evenings are for relaxing and reflecting.

How physically demanding is the work? Very. You might help carry tools to the project site, then clear brush, dig ditches, move rocks, and/or construct water bars. You may use muscles you forgot, or never knew, you had! Be prepared for strenuous labor.

Do I have to sign up for all of the project days? No. That’s the beauty of this program! You may sign up for 2, 3, 4, or more days, depending on what works best with your schedule. We are excited to have a variety of people join us on the trail so we’re offering full or partial participation.

Will we camp on the trail? Sometimes. For some projects, you’ll be backpacking in and camping along the trail. For some projects, you’ll be car camping, either at established campgrounds or primitive sites.

What kind of weather can I expect? All kinds. Depending on the project (or the day, or the hour), you might experience heat, humidity, rain, snow, cold, frost, wind, and/or your idea of blissfully perfect weather. We work through it all.

What are the meals like? Basic. Our teams will plan menus and provide all food. Volunteers may be asked to participate in meal prep and clean up. Once you’re signed up for a project, you’ll have a chance to let us know your food restrictions, allergies, and preferences.

Will drinking water be available? Yes. Drinking water will be available at the established campgrounds. When camping at primitive sites and along the trail, our team will treat all water with iodine and/or water purification filters. Volunteers should bring at least two 32 oz. water bottles with them.

Where do I show up for my project? It varies. Once you’re signed up for a project, we’ll send you directions to the appropriate trailhead or designated meeting spot. You are responsible for arranging your own transportation. If you need assistance with transportation, car pools may be available.

Do I need to bring any tools? No. Our team will provide all necessary tools, as well as work gloves and a hard hat. You will need to bring a pair of long pants and closed-toed shoes to wear while you work. Please see the “What to Bring / Gear List” for items we do recommend you bring.

Can I bring a group of friends? Yes! Please call or email us if you have a group of friends, co-workers, or you are affiliated with a college or other organization that might be interested in signing up a group. Some of the projects do have limited space, so we’ll work with you to find an appropriate project for your group.

Can my children participate? Sometimes. Please contact us to discuss which projects are suitable for children.

Can I bring my dog? No. Please leave all pets at home.

Who are the Northwest Service Academy/AmeriCorps Teams? Please visit “Meet the Teams” to see who you’ll be working with.

How much does it cost? It’s free! We provide all food, tools, and training. This is one of the few volunteer trail work programs without a participation fee. If you would like to contribute to the preservation of this program and to future protection of the Pacific Crest Trail, we encourage you to become a member of the Pacific Crest Trail Association.
