SUMMER MOUNTAIN JOURNEY:

                  Program Components

The Summer Mountain Journey is filled with learning adventures. Days of hiking, kayaking, rafting, low ropes, caving, and an environmental service project make up this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Along the way, you will learn the skills you need             to live well, stay safe, respect the environment and have fun.

Mountain Backpacking:
At 12,276 feet, the majestic Mt. Adams is the second largest mountain in the Lower 48 states.  An ancient volcano that last erupted almost half a million years ago, the peak dominates the landscape for miles around.  We’ll roam the mountain wilderness after setting up a base camp at 8,500 feet.  We'll skirt glaciers, sit beside alpine lakes, and take in unprecedented views.  Mountain goats will graze the mountain side as we relax while sketching rare wildflowers.  We'll end the day watching the last rays of the sunset turn the sky orange, purple, pink and red and revel in the mountain’s beauty

with a group of friends.

Low Ropes Challenge Course:
An on-site Low Ropes Challenge Course equipped with a wide variety of elements  is our way of building a strong group dynamic to last the entire trip. These sessions place particular importance on group teamwork, communication, problem solving and leadership.

Mountain Lake Kayaking:

We’ll spend a lazy afternoon at a local flatwater lake that we’ll explore via inflatable kayaks.  Learn how to paddle your vessel as you cruise the scenic coves and relax while swimming and sunbathing.

Service:
We’ll join forces with an AmeriCorps environmental restoration team to complete a worthwhile service project such as repairing a section of the Pacific Crest Trail.  For two days, we'll focus on improving the natural area that has been our “home” for the past several days.  Our service will make immediate change in our area and provide a springboard for future community involvement.

Caving:
Lava tubes scatter the area from the volcanic explosion of Lemei Rock over eight thousand years ago.  We'll head underground to the perfect setting and settle in to reflect upon the trip's adventures.  Maybe we'll choose a cave filled with ice formations, a perfectly round mole hole, or one wide enough to accomodate a school bus!

White Water Rafting:
Our journey ends with an exhilarating raft trip.  Our teamwork will be put to the test as we navigate down the challenging whitewater of the White Salmon River (with the assistance of the expert guides from Zoller’s Outdoor Odyssey).  On this day, parents are welcome to sign up in advance and join in on the fun!
